I am delighted that Aldi have joined the Free School Meal voucher scheme. At the start of April the government announced that children in South Derbyshire who are eligible for free school meals would receive a weekly shopping voucher worth £15 to spend at supermarkets whilst schools are closed due to the coronavirus.
Aldi now joins the likes of Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose and M&S. I hope that this will be expanded to other shops as they join the scheme. Though some schools are continuing to provide meals and food parcels this will help those that are not doing so at this time.
We must continue to help eligible children and families and ensure that no child goes hungry. I hope that as this scheme expands, it becomes easier for families to get the food they need to get through this pandemic.
The vouchers will be sent from schools in the form of a code by email where they can show this in stores on their phones. Alternatively they will be sent as an eGift card by post to families. I hope the news of this expansion will continue to help families and make life easier as we all work together, staying home, protecting the NHS and saving lives..
It is important that Aldi have joined the scheme as some of the shops on the list do not have sites in South Derbyshire.
