On Friday 10th July and Friday 17th July I was invited to attend and present prizes to winners at Elmsleigh Primary School and Woodville Primary School for their participation in the Bretby Rotary Club’s ‘World War One Investigating Heroes’ competition. The Bretby Rotarians recently ran a competition for Primary Schools in the local area to help them learn about World War One, the kids had to do projects regarding their own family trees and use them to show what role their family played in the Great War.
Everyone who entered had done a brilliant job, and I am certain all involved learned a great deal about not only World War One and the lessons we must all take from its part in history but their own family history also.
Bretby Rotary Club should be commended on their hard work on not only this project which the school kids have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of, but also all their other hard work raising money for national and local charities. Competitions such as this are fantastic at encouraging participation in the remembrance of both World Wars. This encouragement and engagement of young people in our history is what keeps remembrance going and ensures we will never forget the lessons we learned from the two World Wars.
