On the 10th of December I visited ITV’s National Newsroom to watch a live news broadcast.
I was visiting the ITV Studios as part of my Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) Fellowship in the Media and Culture sectors.
My time at the studios included a briefing with Michael Jermey, ITV’s Director of News and Current Affairs, who explained how the news station has changed during his time at the studios. For 2016, ITV have commissioned a new Sunday political interview programme named “Peston on Sunday”, for which Mr Jermey played a central role. I was also lucky enough to learn about the importance of close relationships between regional news deliveres from Rachel Corp, who oversees the award winning ITV News London.
After a meeting with Robin Elias, Managing Editor of ITV News, I received a personal tour of the newsroom before heading to the gallery to watch the local and national news being broadcast live.
I had a fantastic afternoon at ITV, and what I have learnt will prove invaluable in my role as PPS to John Whittingdale, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. ITV were excellent hosts and the opportunity to watch the live broadcast was fascinating.
Following my visit Michael Jeremy added “It was our pleasure to host Heather today. Given her current roles focuses on Culture, Media and Sport, they were very keen to see as much as they could, and it was great to see such enthusiasm from parliamentarians in the work we do.”
