Heather received news on Monday 15th of January that the Home Office is terminating the contract with the Newton Park Hotel, as asylum accommodation. The hotel will cease having asylum seekers before the end of February 2024.
This announcement comes after Mrs Wheeler, on behalf on her constituents, not only wrote to the Home Office a number of times but also asked Parliamentary Questions in November raising the problems of using a four-star hotel in a small village for asylum seekers. Mrs Wheeler had tabled a further question for the afternoon of January 15th to ask for an update on the situation.
Heather says: “The residents of Newton Solney and other near by villages will be relieved by this news. The 4-star hotel at Newton Solney being fully occupied by asylum seekers was having a negative impact on local residents as well as the cost of such accommodation not being sustainable for the Country as a whole.
“This afternoon at Home Office questions in the Chamber, if I am called, I will be thanking the Home Secretary for keeping his word and confirming Newton Park Hotel is in the second tranche of closures of asylum seeker hotels.”
