Heather visited Cadley Park on the edge of Swadlincote, where she planted a tree as part of the Free Tree Scheme, a tree-planting campaign to celebrate the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II.
Cadley Park was previously a colliery which closed in 1988 and was subsequently used for landfill. Now the area has been completely turned around, with land development and extensive tree planting transforming it into a valued part of the wider National Forest. Cadley Park encompasses a country park, two golf courses, a family pub and a development comprising 600 new homes which are currently under construction. With investment from Sport England and British Cycling, the area also boasts cycle paths and a pump track for BMX and mountain-bikers.
Heather Wheeler MP said:
“Volunteers from as wide a range as East Midlands Airport and Pingle School have joined in with the tree planting. Also the Free Tree Scheme is an excellent way to celebrate our late Queen’s life and service. It’s been brilliant to see the regeneration of Cadley Park over the years and this tree planting project is something that people for generations to come will benefit from.”
