Heather visited Coton-in-the-Elms CE (VC) Primary School in Swadlincote. Coton-in-the-Elms has run a hugely successful annual School Parliament for several years, in which the 142 pupils aged 5-11 elect their own Prime Minister. Candidates make speeches on why they are running for office, the issues they care about, and what policies they would like to enact if elected. Heather addressed the Parliament, explaining her role as an MP before taking questions from the pupils.
Heather was also invited to officially open the Early Years Play Area, which had been refurbished over the summer. The play area is an amazing new space for pupils to take part in ‘forest school’, where they can learn about the natural world.
The new opening comes a year after Coton-in-the-Elms was named one of the 20 happiest schools in the world as part of the Brilliant School Award Scheme. The pupils are well-known for their participation in community projects including litter picking and posting ‘positive message cards’ through neighbours’ letterboxes. The pupils have been continuing their good work by raising over £250 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal this year. On Thursday 1st they will be hosting a Christmas wreath workshop in the village community centre.
Heather said: “It’s incredible how community service underpins everything Coton-in the Elms Primary School does. Furthermore, the School Parliament provides children with the opportunity to engage with the political process and to form independent opinions.
“Sadly, youth turnout in national and local elections is sometimes relatively low – the reasons given is that young voters feel disengaged from politics. School Parliament is an excellent means not only of getting kids interested in politics, but of building their up their confidence so they’re well-equipped for any future political engagement.”
“I’ve visited Coton-in-the-Elms’ School Parliament on several occasions over the years, and each time it is an absolute pleasure.”
