Following today’s announcement by Müller Milk and Ingredients that production at its dairy in Foston, Derbyshire, will be wound down, Heather Wheeler, MP for South Derbyshire, said:
“I am extremely unhappy and disappointed that, following the 45-day consultation period which Müller undertook as part of their Project Darwin review, they have advised me that their plant in Foston is to close with the loss of 223 permanent jobs by the end of the year. This was an extremely difficult conversation to have.
This is devastating news for all the families involved and it is important the company, the District Council and the Job Centre work together with the affected employees to secure them alternative employment.
I will do all I can to help ensure everything that can be done is done to ensure this worrying time is as short as possible.
There is a Derby Jobs Fair on Friday 26th July 2019 at the Pride Park Stadium, 10am to 2pm.
Although the event is relatively soon it might give employees some ideas about what is available for local work now.
The Jobs Fair is free to attend for those looking to gain employment and suitable for anyone ages 16- 65.
The company have made it clear that they will keep employees kept informed about future opportunities and I am sure they will work with local companies nearby too who may be looking for new recruits.
As well as the employees there are 31 dairy farms involved stretching over to Leicestershire and Lincolnshire and the company have confirmed to me that they will be meeting with them soon to assist them in finding alternative buyers for their milk.
I will be holding the company to account for these pledges.”
