I am delighted at yesterday’s news that Royal Mail are collaborating with Trading Standards to work together to stamp out scam mail.
Scam mail is unsolicited postal mail that targets the vulnerable with false promises which can often lead to many older people becoming fixated and spending their life savings on the promise that they will win. Tragically these prizes never appear and many die destitute and broken hearted.
Under the initiative, Trading Standards will determine whether a mailing is fraudulent and alert Royal Mail, before writing to the identified company requesting they stop posting the items. Alongside this, Royal Mail will warn the company about its actions before cancelling its contract if it continues to post fraudulent items
It is great news that Royal Mail and Trading Standards have agreed to pair up to tackle scam mail. I was approached shortly after my election by a constituent regarding scam mail and have been working hard ever since to try to make this collaboration a reality.
If you think that a member of your family or someone you know is being targetted with scam mail please do report it so that Royal Mail and Trading Standards can then work with the relevant authorities to investigate and take action can write to Royal Mail at Freepost Scam Mail or call us on 03456 113 413 or email [email protected]
