The Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced a package of £750 million for charities across the UK to support the continuation of the vital work they are doing during the coronavirus. This will be a massive boost for charities in South Derbyshire as they play their part in the national fight against the coronavirus.
£750 million has been set aside for frontline charities including hospices and those supporting domestic abuse victims. £360 million is directly from the government to charities providing key services and those that support vulnerable people. £370 million for smaller charities which includes a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund.
The Government has also committed to match whatever the public donate to the BBC’s Big Night in Charity appeal on the 23rd of April, opening with a donation of at least £20 million to the National Emergencies trust appeal.
Heather Wheeler MP said, “this package of extra funding will really help those charities in South Derbyshire who are doing a fantastic job helping vulnerable people, especially in the current climate. By ensuring key charities like St Johns ambulance, hospices and groups like Girl Guiding continue to get the support they need and deserve.
The coronavirus has had a profound impact on our lives, some more than others. I hope this funding will provide security to charities especially those that support domestic abuse victims and hospices.
