Helping stop the spread of infectious diseases not just the Coronavirus is important. I have always believed in our ability to lead in research to find a vaccine for the Coronavirus and our work to treat other infectious diseases. The UK recently organised the Global Vaccine Summit 2020, helping secure around £6 billion in funding to support global immunization and vaccines.
The vaccine alliance known as Gavi has immunised over 760 million children in some of the most poorest countries in the world, helping to save over 13 million lives. The new commitment over the next five years is a commitment to help save up to 8 million lives.
By working together to find vaccines and ensure their distribution is vital. This summit comes at a unique time, when working with one another is even more important. The UK is the largest donor to the vaccine alliance, pledging £1.65 billion over the next five years. This contribution will help fund the research to find a vaccine, test and treat those affected by the coronavirus.
