During the coronavirus pandemic it has been a priority to help rough sleepers by providing shelter and support both mentally and physically. The government has announced it will go further by providing £105 million to support rough sleepers and those at risk of homelessness. This new funding takes the total funding this year to half a billion. This is an incredible amount and will help to truly end rough sleeping for good.
The support announced will support 15,000 vulnerable people across the UK including any in South Derbyshire. It will help those at risk by helping people into tenancies, deposits for accommodation and secure alternative accommodation that is already available.
By providing accommodation and helping those at risk it has played a massive part in our goal to protect vulnerable people especially during this pandemic. In the long-term the government has also aimed to provide 6,000 long-term safe homes for vulnerable people to keep them off the streets for good.
As the former Minister for Housing and Homelessness I worked hard to help stamp out Rough Sleeping for good and this new funding will help do this. We must look for long term solutions, not just concentrate on the current problems that the coronavirus has highlighted, this continued funding does this.
