Over the past few months, people have begun to reconnect with nature. We have seen more families and friends take time to go on walks and enjoy the countryside and wildlife that surrounds us. Here in South Derbyshire, we are very lucky to be surrounded by beautiful countryside and have the National Forest on our doorsteps.
Enjoying nature is important for peoples physical and mental health. Therefore, I am pleased to welcome Natural England’s ambitious plans to create a more resilient and accessible natural environment for all by 2025, so everyone can enjoy the benefits of our natural environment and learn about its importance and the opportunities it presents.
Recent surveys conducted by Natural England has helped confirm the importance of our natural environment with one third of parents wishing to see their children spend more time outside in nature to support their physical and mental health. We must work together to protect the environment and restore nature, this can be done by restoring places of natural beauty, planting new trees and developing new ponds and green spaces, we also can see the reintroduction of iconic species such as beavers and sea eagles. In addition to this we must also work towards enhancing resilient landscapes and seas; sustainable development; greener farming and fisheries.
The Government is committed to reaching net-zero emissions as we secure a Green recovery. This involves a well-managed recovery network across land, water and sea. These will then protect vital ecosystems rich in wildlife and natural beauty. The Prime Minister has also committed to secure 30 per cent of UK land which will help secure a greener and brighter future for all. David Attenborough’s new Documentary highlights to us all the importance of restoring and reconnecting with the wild. It is important for not just wildlife and environments but for us as well and perhaps now is the perfect time to spend time with friends and loved ones and explore the outstanding beauty that is here in South Derbyshire.
