Today marks a turning point in the fight against COVID-19. The first person, Margaret Keenan aged 90 has received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. The vaccine was developed in record time but is certified safe for public use in the UK. Scientists have worked round the clock to develop this vaccine and it has undergone numerous tests to ensure it is safe for the public to use.
The vaccine is 95% effective against the virus and will allow us to eventually to return to normal. Around 4 million people will be vaccinated before the end of the year, starting with the most vulnerable people in society, over 80 along with some health and care staff. It will take some time to ensure that everyone is vaccinated so please do continue to follow the government guidelines on social distancing.
I know some people may have their concerns on the safety of this vaccine due to its rapid development, but it has gone through rigorous clinical trials, looking at the affects on various age groups, with different health problems and different medication. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has concluded that the vaccine meets the strict safety standards that every vaccine must meet before it is allowed to be distributed. I will be getting a vaccine as soon as I am eligible to do so.
I welcome this fantastic news and welcome the days in which we businesses can open as normal and families and friends can meet and hug one another again. Next year will certainly be brighter and better.
