Heather recently visited The Granville Academy in Midway and spoke to the Year 11 assembly. The school organises Career Assemblies for Year 11 and Heather was part of this program. The Granville Academy has recently been awarded a gold for safeguarding.
Heather says:
“It's a great idea of the school to do regular assemblies on careers. I was able to speak about the various political careers that students can get involved with. One pupil asked me about the money – as I always say don’t go into politics for money – for one there is no security – there are plenty of careers e.g. doctors, teachers, engineers etc, where you can earn more, have longer careers and get better pensions. In politics, however, you can help change the world for the better.
“I was extremely interested to hear from the Principal that the school is expanding to 900 pupils in the next academic year. The school is also increasing its engineering capacity to help prepare students for the local jobs marketplace. Engineering is one of the areas which as a country we have a skills shortage, so this is great news.
“As well as speaking to the students I was able to congratulate the school on their recent success in getting awarded a gold for their excellent safeguarding work. It was helpful to talk through issues with the teachers and Principal Michelle Oliphant, a really lovely visit."
